Our Story
Some journeys begin with a dream. Others begin with heartbreak.
For me, the vision for Journeys: The Road to Safety, Stability and Success was born through witnessing the silent struggles of women living with serious mental health conditions. Years ago, my church family watched a young woman named Raquel, the beloved niece of our previous pastor, live with schizophrenia. Her journey left a lasting impression on my heart and opened my eyes to the challenges that individuals and families face while trying to navigate mental illness with limited support and understanding.
Years later, what I had witnessed became deeply personal when my own daughter, JeCara, was diagnosed with schizophrenia. As a mother, I experienced firsthand the fear, uncertainty, and emotional pain that so many families quietly endure. I also witnessed the gaps in mental health care, housing resources, advocacy, and coordinated support. Too often, families are left to navigate complex systems alone while their loved ones struggle in silence.
Through those experiences, God placed Journeys: The Road to Safety, Stability and Success on my heart.
Journeys was created to be more than an organization. It is a place of hope, healing, advocacy, and restoration. Our mission is to create a safe, judgment-free environment where women and their families can receive support during mental health crises, access housing and community resources, obtain referrals to legal professionals when needed, and receive advocacy while navigating healthcare, the courts, probation, and other community systems. We believe that compassionate intervention, collaboration, and access to the right resources can change lives and help prevent unnecessary incarceration while promoting healing, accountability, and stability.
Our work places a special emphasis on supporting Black women, recognizing the unique barriers they often face in accessing culturally responsive mental health care and supportive services. We believe every woman deserves to be seen, heard, respected, and empowered to seek healing without shame or stigma.
At Journeys, we know that recovery is not a path anyone should walk alone. We are committed to walking beside women and families every step of the way, helping them move from crisis to hope, from uncertainty to stability, and from surviving to thriving.
Our motto, “Taking those silent walks and turning them into supported journeys,” reflects the heart of our organization. It is a reminder that behind every diagnosis is a person, behind every crisis is a family, and behind every journey is the possibility of hope, healing, and a brighter future.
